Cabinet clears foreign varsity bill

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) The cabinet Monday cleared a bill that will enable foreign educational institutions set up campuses in India.

"This is a milestone which will enhance choices, increase competition, and benchmark quality," Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Guwahati, March 15 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Monday presented a populist tax-free budget with lots of sops for the rural poor, besides incentives for the education sector, jobs for the unemployed and welfare measures for women in a bid to woo voters ahead of next year's assembly elections.

The Rs.3.464.46 crore deficit budget for the fiscal 2010-11 estimates a growth rate of 9 percent.

Avoid wells in Maoist areas, security forces told

Ranchi, March 15 (IANS) Security forces who have expanded their drive against Maoists in Jharkhand have been told not to drink water from wells because they may have been poisoned, official sources said Monday.

The advisory came as authorities widened the scale of a massive anti-Maoist offensive in the state, from the initial three districts to several parts of the state.

Pak gives up on hosting Davis Cup tie against New Zealand

Islamabad, Mar 12(AN): The Pakistan’s Tennis Federation (PTF) has given up hope of hosting its Davis Cup tie against New Zealand in July following a series of militant attacks in the country like last Friday’s suicide bomb attacks in Lahore. Pakistan has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of suicide attacks carried out across the country and loss of life over the past couple of years, including the ambush of the Sri Lanka cricket team’s bus last year, leading to the cancellation of several sporting events. PTF president Dilawar Abbas said he saw little chance of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) agreeing to allow Pakistan host the game. “We had sent a letter to the ITF pressing them to allow us to host the tie on schedule as it is imperative for Pakistan tennis to play international ties at home,” The Daily Times quoted Abbas, as saying.“But now while we are waiting for a response there is no doubt the situation has changed after the Lahore blasts,” he added.

L&T bags Rs.2,000 crore order from Managalore Petrochemicals

Mumbai, March 15 (IANS) Engineering and construction major Larsen and Toubro Friday said it has won a Rs.2,035-crore order from the state-run Managalore Petrochemicals, a unit of Oil and Natural Gas Corp.

The fresh order is for setting up a new complex which will manufacture aromatic products like paraxylene and benzene at the Mangalore Special Economic Zone in Karnataka.

Lucknow feels heat of Mayawati rally

Lucknow, March 15 (IANS) People in this Uttar Pradesh capital, particularly the board examinees, Monday had a harrowing time reaching their destinations due to lack of buses owing to the Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) rally to mark its 25th anniversary celebrations. Students had to leave for their examination centres a few hours before their papers started.

According to sources, nearly 130 buses from Lucknow have been pressed into service for ferrying BSP workers to Chief Minister Mayawati's rally and back to their native places.

Lok Sabha adjourned over Bareilly violence

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) Parties across the political spectrum, including the Congress, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Monday joined hands against the communal violence in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, leading to the Lok Sabha being adjourned.

Speaker Meira Kumar initially allowed SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to raise the issue of the violence in Bareilly, parts of which have been under curfew since March 2. Mulayam Singh alleged that the district and state administrations in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)-ruled state were responsible for the violence and asked the central government to make a statement in the house.
