National Security Act slapped on Orissa criminal

Bhubaneswar, March 10 (IANS) The National Security Act was slapped Wednesday on a criminal arrested last week in Orissa's mineral-rich Keonjhar district for his alleged involvement in illegal mining and other crimes, police said.

Jitendra Jha, 36, was arrested last Saturday from his house in Barbil town and around Rs.1 crore cash, some Thai currency and gold ornaments worth more than Rs.25 lakh was recovered from him.

IAF lost six fighters in six months: Antony

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) Six fighter aircraft and one helicopter of the Indian Air Force crashed in the past six months, Defence Minister A.K. Antony told the Rajya Sabha Wednesday.

"In the past six months, six fighter aircraft and one helicopter of the IAF have crashed. Preliminary causes of the accidents were human error and technical defects," he said.

CII pitches for defence park in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, March 10 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government should set up a defence park near Madurai to take advantage of the country's offset policy, the state chapter of industry lobby Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) says.

"We have submitted a proposal to set up an defence industrial park near Madurai to union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers M.K. Alagiri. This is one more effort to industrialise southern Tamil Nadu," C.K.Ranganathan, chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Council, told reporters here Wednesday.

Five children injured in bomb explosion

Lucknow, March 10 (IANS) Five children, including a girl, were injured when a country-made bomb hidden in a garbage dump exploded Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur district, police said.

The children are being treated at a hospital, where the condition of two of them is stated to be critical.

UPA discriminating against Punjab: Sukhbir Badal

Chandigarh, March 10(IANS) Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Wednesday alleged that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has been discriminating against the state in the sharing of central taxes.

"Despite contributing 75.3 percent wheat and 50 percent paddy in the central pool, we are given only a 1.3 per cent share in the central taxes," said Badal.

PETA urges people to avoid fish-eating in Tamil Nadu

CITU conference from March 17

Chandigarh, March 10 (IANS) The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) will hold its all-India conference in Punjab's Zirakpur town March 17-21.

Court seeks response on three-year medical course (Lead)

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the government to make its stand clear on a plea seeking a three-year course on primary health to allow non-MBBS doctors to practise in rural areas.

A division bench of acting Chief Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Mukta Gupta directed the government to file a detailed affidavit specifying whether it has accepted the recommendations given by the Central Council for Health and the Task Force which recommended a three-year course for medical practitioners.
