AAP nominates Shelly Oberoi as mayor candidate in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday announced its candidate for Mayor and Deputy Mayor post in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Party’s national secretary Pankaj Gupta said that Shelly Oberoi has been nominated for the Delhi Mayor post whereas AAP’s Matia Mahal MLA Shoib Iqbal’s son Aale Mohammad Iqbal has been nominated for Deputy Mayor.

The election for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Municipal Corporation is going to be held on January 6, 2023.

Shelly Oberoi contested MCD polls for the first time from ward 86— East Patel Nagar (New Delhi).

It is possible that Shelly Oberoi may be elected unopposed for the post of Mayor as BJP has indicated not to field a candidate.

Former Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta had said that due to AAP getting majority, the next mayor will also be from the party. BJP will act as a strong opposition in MCD.

This is being seen as a change in BJP’s stand because after the election results, BJP had said that ‘AAP’ has won the MCD but the mayor’s election is yet to be held.

Shelly Oberoi is a corporator from East Patel Nagar. According to her Twitter profile, she has been an assistant professor at Delhi University, Indraprastha University, IGNOU and NMIMS. He has also introduced himself as a writer.

The Aam Aadmi Party won the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections held in December. The BJP was in power in the Municipal Corporation for 15 years. But, in these elections, Aam Aadmi Party won 134 seats and BJP won 104 seats.
